Cutting-edge, immersive learning featured in GPA Midstream Association Conference

OKMULGEE – Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology and XALTER partner to transform learning in the classroom and industry by applying XR technology to create immersive learning experiences.

Attendees at this year’s GPA Midstream Convention on September 26-29 in San Antonio will get a sneak peek into the future of immersive learning in the oil & gas industry as the partnership is unveiled.

Partnering for Success

Through a collaborative partnership with Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology and Tulsa, Oklahoma-based XALTER, a 20-year-old, award-winning visual media production company; together they will re-design what is possible in an applied technical training lab space. This team brings together renowned instructional designers, researchers, data scientists, alongside award winning visual artisans who are committed to creating XR-integrated curricula. With the combined expertise of OSUIT and XALTER, this partnership is uniquely qualified to reimagine technical skills training to adapt to a new generation of digital learners while serving the learning & development challenges facing private industry such as the impact of COVID-19 on large group learning, a growing remote workforce, and increasing training engagement.

VR-based training is not new as Offshore Technology recently documented rising interest from major oil & gas companies such as Baker Hughes, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, and many others. What makes the OSUIT and XALTER collaboration unique is the breadth of experiential learning environments (individual, lab, simulator), open access to both students and private industry, and the ability to create custom virtual learning content for equipment OEMs that want to provide their customers with more engaging and effective training.

Introducing a Future-Proof Solution

The XR-Integrated Curricula project at OSUIT is a multi-year, multi-million-dollar initiative committed to bring dozens of technical-based curriculum tracks and thousands of students into an XR-Centric education and training environment. This visionary project proposes to utilize the immersive and interactive world of extended reality (XR) technology to do for applied laboratory-based instruction what online learning has done for theoretical lecture-based instruction. That is to allow students and instructors to assemble remotely in virtual lab spaces that have been customized with three-dimensional, interactive representations of all the tools and equipment normally found in instructional labs on campus.

Bridging from the classroom to the field, XALTER has already delivered XR-based training tools for Marathon Petroleum and others as part of the initial roll-out with more projects planned in 2022.

GPA Midstream Convention attendees can learn more by attending a live demo and hospitality reception with OSUIT and XALTER on Tuesday, September 28 starting at 7pm in Salon C at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter.
